The Chihuahua

The Chihuahua is saucy, brave and alert, a spirited little dog that thinks it is as big as all the others are.  The Chihuahua is strong-willed and does not always mix willingly with other breeds or with cats.

The rounded, apple shaped head, short muzzle, large round eyes and big flaring ears give it a saucy expression.  It is quick moving, with dainty feet and moderately long nails, with a unique flat furry tail carried sickle fashion over the back.

Chihuahua’s can be any colour or mixture of colours.  There are two varieties – smoothcoat (close and glossy), or longcoat (soft-textured, flat on the body with feathering on the ears, feet, legs, a well plumed tail, pants on hindquarters and a ruff round the neck).

Obviously Chihuahua’s are not expensive to feed, but they do best on two to three small meals a day.  Because of their loyalty, affection, small size and big bark alarm system they make ideal companions for older or lonely people.  They will happily exercise as much or as little as their owner wishes, but they like their home comforts.  Generally they are better in homes without small children unless they are supervised.

Chihuahua’s are not as delicate as they look, despite a tendency to shiver when they want attention.  However they do need the same kind of warmth as their owners.

The Chihuahua also has a “molera”, a small depression on the skull which sometimes does not close over as it does in humans.  Consequently the dog is at some risk from knocks on the head.
